How should I ask my favorite teacher to write a recommendation letter?
After you pull your favorite teacher aside, I would start the process of asking the big question with, “Would you be able to…,” since you would need to know if they’re able to write one for you in the first place. A lot of teachers are very busy, so it’s nice to be considerate of their time.
How do I deal with the cold walking from class to class?
With how cold it’s gotten recently, walking from class to class has lowkey become the most treacherous part of the day. However, here are some hacks to make those few minutes fly by. First: Bring. A. Coat. I, for some reason, never brought a coat during my freshman and sophomore years because I didn’t want to carry it. But, carrying it is not as bothersome as being frozen when walking outside. Additionally, you’ve gotta learn the shortcuts to buildings and walk through buildings. For example, if you need to get to Reid from the science center, go out the backdoor of Sci, through Cressey, and then walk through Corbin. This way, you minimize the amount of time you’re outside so you do not get as cold.
How do I avoid burnout?
It depends on the causes of your burnout. If it’s because you’re not getting enough sleep, then I would say use the Night Shift option on iPhone’s — so that your eyes aren’t exposed to the invasive blue light the screens have. If you feel too overloaded with work from school, then I would take a mental health day. And this is not the senioritis speaking here; this is coming from an LFA student with experience in dealing with all types of burnout. Taking a day for yourself every once in a while is so overlooked at LFA that it’s not even funny. Think about it: If you feel so overwhelmed and too overburdened with work, then how are you going to put in your best effort that teachers expect from you in every assignment? You can’t, I hate to break it to you. If you aren’t able to stay home for whatever reason, there are always people happily willing to help you find solutions to these kinds of problems in the Health Center – use these resources to your advantage when you have them.
One half of my hair is a completely different texture than the other side. What do I do?
Make a homemade hair mask filled with omega vitamins and healthy fats, such as avocados, mayonnaise, honey and olive oil. Then, you mix it. Brush it through your hair. Leave it on for one hour. Finally, you rinse in the shower. Done!
How do I fix my hair after I wake up from sleeping with wet hair?
I used to do this all the time, so what I did was just constantly brush my hair and dry it with a microfiber towel. Lay a new, dry towel on your pillow when you go to sleep. Do not sleep on your hair — that’s the important part. Make sure your hair is above your head so that it’s not crumpled when you wake up.
How to not stress over missing a day of class?
It depends if the stress is coming from you or other people (parents). If you’re the only one who’s stressed over missing a day of school, then I’d say to be nicer to yourself and make yourself understand that it is completely OK and normal to take some days off from time to time. We are humans, not robots – and sometimes, even robots crash, so give yourself some slack. On the other hand, if it’s other people in your life, then I’d say you should try to have a talk with them and get them to understand how you feel and what’s going on (i.e. if school is becoming overwhelming).
Can you please help me with AP Lang?
AP Lang can be challenging because it is the first AP English class offered and, in my opinion, is even more challenging because there is no way to study for it. But, here are some tips! One thing my freshman year English teacher taught me was at the end of each chapter, write a summary or list of important details. This way, in a test or studying or anything you may use your book for, you can jog your memory to exactly what that chapter is about without having to look through the whole chapter. Also, devote time to memorizing the vocab because those tests should be free points. I was in Ms. Foster’s class last year and she is always more than happy to clarify or help you out if you’re confused. Also, one of the nice things about AP classes is that there are study guides online that will tell you what you need to know for the exam. While they are not going to align with the books we read at LFA, they can assist in learning and practicing skills – such as using literary devices – that you will need to demonstrate. Another easy way to boost your grade is participation. AP Lang is heavily discussion based, and so even by just asking a question or questioning someone else in a discussion, you can increase your participation grade and, therefore, your overall grade.
How to keep up with your resolution?
The trick is to make goals within your goals because trying to achieve momentous things are difficult for most since they don’t know where to even start. So, I’d say to make little weekly or monthly goals for yourself to achieve whatever your main resolution is. For example: my main, biggest goal is to get to sleep earlier; one of the sub-goals I have is doing my homework earlier (prioritizing my time).
What’s your curly hair routine?
My hair is more on the wavy side, but every person that has tried my routine has loved it, so I’m qualified to give tips. The second you’re done with your shower, flip your hair upside down and put your leave in conditioner in (I use Not Your Mama’s), finger brush then regular brush. Then use your curl cream (I use Moroccan Oil) and GLIDE it over your hair– do not rake it– and then scrunch. Then use your curl mousse (I use Not Your Mama’s) and again glide it, then scrunch. When you scrunch your hair, try to get all the excess water out. Finally, use your gel (I use Jelly Curls) and, again, glide it over your hair and scrunch. Then, take a t-shirt or microfiber hair towel and scrunch out the excess product. You should do all those steps with your hair flipped upside down. If you have time, you can “plop” your hair– look up a tutorial on how to do that on Tiktok. If you “plop” it, I usually leave mine for 45 minutes. Once you take it out, drench your hair in heat protectant (I use Moroccan Oil) and then diffuse it until it’s about 90% dry. Your hair will be stiff afterward; it’s from the gel and mousse. Don’t freak out. After you diffuse, let your gel cast (the stiffness) sit for about an hour, then scrunch out the gel cast with any hair oil– like it actually does not matter. Ta-da! You’re done. Wavy/curly hair can be hard to take care of because of the time and, for example, if I don’t do mine it turns all frizzy and looks awful, but experiment with what routine works best for you.
How can you learn how to ice skate?
If you have a friend, ask them! You would hit two birds with one stone: hanging out with that friend/having fun and learning to magically glide. But if you want to glide solo, then grab a pair of skates somewhere (Crown has some), find a local rink (again, Crown) and take (group) lessons if you can.
How should I accessorize my prom dress?
Omg, my favorite. Prom dress shopping, while maybe stressful, is so fun and a great way to express yourself. First, you wanna see if your dress color is more cool-toned or warm-toned. This will determine if you should wear gold or silver jewelry. Also, depending on how you wear your hair, hairpins are severely underrated because they are so cute. Personally, I don’t bring a purse to prom because I don’t like to carry it around the whole time, but if that is your vibe – go crazy. You can also find ideas on Pinterest and other websites that have suggestions on what to wear with the dress you chose.
I am having a hard time adjusting to being back at school. What can I do to make this transition easier?
We kinda talked about this a little before, but here are some more words of motivation. Honestly, I have had to force myself to do my work the past couple days, and on top of being sick, my motivation is nowhere to be found. Try to remind yourself of how good it feels to receive good grades or have your work appreciated. Also, your teachers are here to support you. If you find that you’re having a hard time keeping up and/or are struggling to retain information, set up a cycle meeting so that you can get some clarity. Especially for those in AP classes, the second semester moves quickly as you prepare for the AP tests in May, so falling behind now makes it a lot harder to catch up. Honestly, fake it ‘till you make it is the best policy. Force yourself to take notes, do your homework and participate in class so that you can fall back into your groove that you were in last semester. I believe in you!
Where should I shop for prom dresses?
Sigh, I ask myself this exhausting question every April. But, I will save you all of the hours I spent staring at my screen and scrolling. My friends and I religiously look on Revolve’s website, but their selections can be pretty pricey. So, we also like to go through Peppermayo, Lulus, and PrettyLittleThing.
