Recession music is so back — and Tate McRae takes this on with a solid record heavily influenced by artists from the early 2000’s.
Tate McRae has been gaining more traction over the last couple of years, primarily as a performer. Regardless of the criticism, her ability as a dancer puts on an unforgettable show. Until her 2025 release, the music came second. For the first time, there is at least a clear artistic vision supported by the pop bangers.
This album was surprisingly refreshing, especially since the lead single “It’s ok I’m ok” felt like it was reaching for another viral moment like she had with “greedy” in 2023. However, the release of the next singles, “2 hands” and “Sports car” did truly intrigue me to see where this project would go.
Upon the albums’ release, McRae released a music video for a song on the album, “Revolving door” proving to be the most artful and visually/sonically interesting piece of music she’s ever created. The use of her beautiful dancing skills in the video add so much to the song and the bridge is undeniably addicting.
This album falls short with moments that feel like a xerox of a xerox, most notably “Purple lace bra” sounding like Addison Rae’s “Diet Pepsi” which is inspired by Britney Spears. However, this record is solid and has a handful of great songs — showing extreme growth from posting YouTube videos with a tiny keyboard in 2017.
