Five years after his Christmas Day release, Playboi Carti returns to music with good yet partially unfinished tracks on a bloated catalogue — proving fans will be excited for anything he chooses to release.
Make no mistake, this album has a few groundbreaking, genre-bending tracks that were undoubtedly worth the hiatus. The rest is a pile of demos, scraps, random features, and at times, just trash. Considering that Carti fans are the most annoying people to ever exist, and Carti haters are a close runner-up, this album deserves to be called what it is; mid.
It wasn’t the worst listening experience in the world, it certainly wasn’t the best, but the true issue lies in Playboi Carti sitting comfortably releasing whatever he feels like, while having the greatest potential among all the modern hip-hop artists. On top of a messy rollout and consistent delays, it was bold of him to title this album MUSIC when that’s barely what it is at times. In the future, if Carti commits himself to making something great, he could craft the perfect record. Until then, we’ll just have to live in delusion.
