On Friday, October 10, Lake Forest Academy welcomed Christine Devine, a 16-time Emmy Award-winning newscaster from Fox 11 Los Angeles, to campus for a special visit. Devine spoke with students in English 9, Journalism 2 and Advanced Journalistic Writing and Reporting, offering firsthand insight to the fast-paced and ever-changing world of broadcast journalism.
Drawing from more than 30 years at Fox, Devine captivated students with stories that blended honesty, humor, and heart. She spoke about the evolution of television news, the challenges of maintaining credibility in the digital age and the deep responsibility that comes with telling other people’s stories. Her reflections on breaking barriers as a woman of color in the industry resonated especially with aspiring young journalists in the room.
Devine also discussed the power of journalism to create change, emphasizing empathy and curiosity as core skills for every storyteller. She shared memorable experiences from her decades covering Los Angeles, including moments of triumph and tragedy that have helped her approach the newsroom.
Following her classroom visits, Devine joined the LFA podcast In Between the Lines for an exclusive interview, where she spoke about her career path, her advice for students pursuing media and the importance of staying grounded in an industry that’s constantly evolving. Her visit served as both an inspiration and a reminder of journalism’s enduring impact. “Every story is a chance to connect — to bring light, understanding, and sometimes even hope,” she told students.
