Tyler Okonma (Tyler the Creator)’s long-awaited seventh studio album infuses jazz, electronic, soul, and hip-hop to create pure pandemonium — in the coolest way possible.
Across its near hour-long span, Okonma crafts the 14 tracks as individual puzzle pieces that fit together to create a modern classic. The secret features from artists like Lil Wayne, Daniel Caesar, and Sexyy Red combine with the innovative instrumentation and meticulous lyricism flawlessly. This new project proves that hip-hop is alive and well, and still has more to offer.
This album is easily his most experimental, and its contrasting sound palette paints evocative and authentic pictures in a non-linear yet cohesive storytelling format. He seems to explore the highs and lows of fame, while also navigating being in his 30’s, wondering how long he’ll be able to continue making great records.
One thing that was missing, though, was the full and atmospheric production found on his earlier projects. Although the production is incredible, it takes a more “back of the room” approach which could throw the listener off upon first listen. Many of the high-energy moments are a tad lackluster in comparison to the climax moments of IGOR, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, and Flower Boy.
Above all, this record substantiates the fact that Tyler, the Creator still has more to say, and he’s able to do it effectively and effortlessly.
